Week 4

Week 4-Julianne Moore: Oscar winning Still Alice role taught me that Alzheimer's can't kill a person's soul

09:00, 6 March 2015 By Alun Palmer

When her moment of glory arrived it was well overdue.

Nominated four times before – for Boogie Nights, The End Of The Affair, The Hours and Far From Heaven – Julianne Moore finally bagged a Best Actress Oscar last month.

In Still Alice, she plays a highly respected Columbia University linguistics expert who starts to get lost on her regular jogging runs and, ironically, begins to grasp for words.

In a devastating diagnosis, she finds she has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Since the film’s American release she has been touched by viewer’s reactions.

She said: “I got a note from a friend of mine’s wife saying she’d had a family member with Alzheimer’s too, and she suddenly felt close to her and felt like she understood something about the experience.

“For me, after all the research that I did, people have this notion that with Alzheimer’s, somehow the ‘self’ disappears. They’re like, ‘That’s not the person I knew,’ and ‘Somehow the self has gone away, somehow they’re not present anymore’.

“But in all my research and dealings with people, I’ve found the opposite. The people, they were changed, certainly, but their personality somehow remained. That was really, tremendously moving to me.”

Moore, 54, spent four months researching the role, speaking to sufferers and their relatives, immersing herself fully into the disease.

“I started watching everything I could get my hands on,” she said.

“Every film, documentary and interview. The head of the national Alzheimer’s Association talked about her

experiences and then they set up these Skype calls with three women across the country — all who had been diagnosed with early onset, or what they call ‘younger onset’, which means before the age of 65.

“And the youngest person I spoke to was a woman who was diagnosed at 45, which was astonishing.”

● Still Alice is released today.

Week 3-36 Killed In New Year's Stampede In China

Week 3-36 Killed In New Year's Stampede In China

State media and a witness claim the tragedy happened after "fake money" was thrown from a bar overlooking New Year celebrations.

Thirty-six people have been killed in a stampede at a New Year's event on Shanghai's historic waterfront.

Forty-seven more people were injured, 13 of them seriously, in the chaos, city officials said.

The disaster happened shortly before midnight on Wednesday as people packed the Bund area to usher in 2015.

The official news agency Xinhua said a Taiwanese person was among the dead, and that 25 of those killed were women.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has demanded an immediate investigation.

It was not immediately clear what triggered the stampede, but state media and a witness said the incident was caused when people tried picking up fake money thrown from a building.

A man who brought one of the injured to a local hospital for treatment said fake money had been thrown down from a bar above the street as part of a New Year's celebration.

People rushed to pick up the money, triggering the stampede, said the man, who declined to be identified.

But Xinhua reported that surveillance footage showed the notes had been thrown after the stampede, at 11.47 pm, citing the Shanghai police official microblog.

Local TV reported authorities were investigating the money-throwing incident, but attributed the cause of the stampede to people slipping and falling in crowded conditions.

In an unusually critical commentary, Xinhua said the tragedy was a "wake-up call that the world's second-largest economy is still a developing country which has fragile social management."

Authorities had shown some concern about crowd control in the days leading up to New Year's Eve.

They had cancelled an annual 3D laser show on the Bund that last year attracted around 300,000 people.

The historic riverfront strip runs along an area of narrow streets surrounded by restored old buildings, shops and tourist attractions.

Week 2-Peshawar school attack perpetrator arrested by Pak military

By PTI |Posted 24-Feb-2015

One of the main perpetrators of the Peshawar school massacre who was disguised as an internally displaced person, was arrested today, the Pakistani military said.

Taj Mohammad, 27, was the commander of the second group that attacked Army Public School. The second terrorist group involved was led by Atiqur Rehman alias Usman, who has already been captured by security forces, according to an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) spokesman. Mohammad is a resident of Sippah in Khyber's Koi Chowk Bara.

He was disguised as an internally displaced person (IDP) in the village of Pawakai in Peshawar, Dawn reported. Muhammad said he was a member of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and admitted his involvement in numerous other terrorist activities around Peshawar and North Waziristan, the report said.

Previously, the army had claimed to have made key arrests in connection with the school attack and said that all those involved, except six suspects, had either been killed or captured. "The gang involved in the APS attack...comprised of 27 terrorists, 12 of whom have been arrested in Pakistan and Afghanistan, nine have been killed and six are at large," Director General ISPR Maj Gen Asim Bajwa had previously said.

Week 1- AirAsia flight QZ8501

AirAsia flight QZ8501: Co-pilot was flying doomed plane when it crashed into

The French first officer and co-pilot of AirAsia flight QZ8501 was controlling the plane in the last moments before it crashed into the sea off Indonesia, killing all 162 on board.

Captain Remi Plesel, 46, is believed to have been in charge from take-off until the cockpit voice recording, recovered from the Java Sea earlier this month, ends.

Mr Plesel had 2,247 hours experience, according to a Bloomberg report last month, in comparison to his co-pilot captain Iriyanto, 53, who had clocked up more than 20,000.

Shortly after the plane went down, Mr Plesel’s mother Rolande told French newspaper Le Parisen: “He wanted to be a pilot ever since he was a child.”

The head Indonesian investigator Mardjono Siswosuwarno claimed that information from the flight data recorder provided a “pretty clear picture” of what happened in the last moments of Flight QZ8501.

The data recovered allows a partial reconstruction of the final minutes before the crash.

Investigators said the plane, travelling from Indonesia’s Surabaya to Singapore, rose sharply upwards in 30 seconds to 37,400ft before dropping back to 32,000ft in a three minute stretch.

"The second-in-command, popularly known as the co-pilot, who usually sits to the right of the cockpit. At the time, he was flying the plane," said Mr Siswosuwarno. "The captain, sitting to the left, was the pilot monitoring."
